Stephen is a 26-year-old from Mukono District who, like many young Ugandans, faced the challenge of unemployment despite having completed secondary education. Without computer skills or technical training, finding meaningful work seemed almost impossible.
The Digital Divide
Growing up in a rural area, Stephen had limited exposure to technology. His school had no computer lab, and the nearest internet cafe was miles away. When he finished school, he quickly realized that most jobs required computer skills he simply didn't have.
"I would see job advertisements asking for computer skills, and I would skip them," Stephen recalls. "I didn't even know how to turn on a computer. I felt like the world was moving forward and I was being left behind."
Discovering U-TOUCH's ICT Program
In 2021, Stephen learned about U-TOUCH's Information and Communications Technology Program through a community announcement. The program offered free computer training to young people in the community, and Stephen immediately signed up.
"I was nervous on the first day," he admits. "Everyone else seemed to know more than me. But the trainers were patient and started from the very basics. They never made anyone feel stupid for asking questions."
Learning Digital Skills
Over the course of six months, Stephen learned computer basics, Microsoft Office applications, internet navigation, email communication, and even basic web design. But more than technical skills, he gained confidence in his ability to learn new things.
The program also included soft skills training - how to write a professional resume, prepare for job interviews, and present oneself in a business environment. These skills proved just as valuable as the technical training.
A New Career Path
Shortly after completing the program, Stephen applied for a position as a data entry clerk at a local NGO. Armed with his new skills and a professional resume, he impressed the interviewers and got the job.
"I remember my first day at work," Stephen says with a smile. "I walked into the office, sat down at my own computer, and thought - I know how to use this. I belong here."
Giving Back to the Community
Today, Stephen has been promoted twice and now manages a small team at his organization. But his greatest pride comes from volunteering as a trainer in U-TOUCH's ICT program on weekends.
"I know exactly how my students feel because I was in their shoes," he explains. "When I see that moment when something clicks for them - when they send their first email or create their first document - it reminds me of my own journey."
Impact Beyond Himself
Stephen's success has inspired others in his community. His younger siblings are now computer literate, and he has helped several neighbors create resumes and apply for jobs online. He has become an informal technology advisor for his entire village.
"My grandmother calls me when she can't understand a message on her phone," he laughs. "But I don't mind. Every person I help is one more person who can access the opportunities that technology brings."
